Straight answer

How much does it cost to start a skincare line?

A private-label skincare launch — a stock formula, stock packaging and a custom label at a 500-unit minimum — typically starts in the low five figures for a first SKU once components, filling, labels and freight are counted. A custom-formulated line with exclusive packaging, clinical claims and several SKUs scales into the mid five to six figures, because formulation, stability testing, claim substantiation and packaging tooling are all paid before a single sellable unit exists. Neither number includes the costs outside manufacturing: brand identity, photography, a storefront, insurance and the marketing budget to actually sell the inventory.

Where the money actually goes

A realistic first-launch budget has more line items than founders expect.

  • —Bulk formula — often the smallest line item
  • —Primary packaging: bottle, jar, pump, cap — frequently the largest
  • —Secondary packaging: carton, insert, shipper
  • —Labels and decoration, including plates and tooling for custom components
  • —Formulation and stability testing, for custom work
  • —Microbiological and preservative efficacy testing
  • —Filling, assembly and QC
  • —Freight, warehousing and fulfillment setup
  • —Regulatory: product listing, safety file, and OTC testing where applicable

The most common budgeting mistake

Founders budget for the first production run and nothing else. The run that matters is the second one: if the first sells through in three months and the reorder takes four months to produce, the brand is out of stock during its best window.

Plan the reorder capital at the same time as the launch capital, and ask your manufacturer for the reorder lead time in writing before the first purchase order.

Getting a real number

Any quote that does not name the packaging is a guess. Unit cost moves more with the pack than with the formula. Send us the category, target fill size, packaging direction and target annual volume and we return minimums, lead times and unit pricing within one business day.
