What is the MOQ for skincare manufacturing?

At SkinCore Labs, minimum order quantities start at 500 units per SKU for serums, moisturizers, cleansers, body care and toners. Face masks and eye creams start at 1,000 units per SKU, and OTC sunscreen starts at 3,000 units per SKU because of the additional testing and regulatory work involved. Custom formulation — a formula built from scratch rather than a stock base — typically carries a higher minimum than the private-label equivalent, and the final number depends on packaging selection, fill size and formula complexity. It is confirmed in writing at project kickoff.

Why MOQs exist at all

A minimum order quantity is not an arbitrary gate. It reflects the smallest run where the fixed costs of a production job — line setup, changeover, cleaning validation, QC testing and component ordering — can be spread across enough units to make the unit price sane for the brand.

Packaging is usually the real constraint rather than the bulk formula. Component suppliers set their own minimums on bottles, pumps, caps and cartons, and decorated components (printed, frosted or custom-tooled) carry higher minimums than stock ones. A brand that accepts stock packaging can almost always launch at a lower quantity than one that specifies a custom pack.

How to launch at the lowest possible minimum

Founders who need to validate demand before committing capital have a few reliable levers.

  • —Start from a stock formula rather than a custom one
  • —Use stock packaging with a custom label instead of custom tooling
  • —Launch two or three SKUs rather than a full range
  • —Choose a category with a 500-unit entry point for the first launch
  • —Plan the custom formulation work as phase two, once the range is selling
