Where credible manufacturers actually live
Most legitimate US skincare manufacturers cluster in Southern California, South Florida, New Jersey and parts of the Midwest. Korean and EU manufacturers are credible for advanced actives and clinical skincare but introduce longer lead times and customs friction. Treat any 'manufacturer' that lists no physical address as a broker, not a producer.
Certifications that matter, and ones that do not
Required: cGMP compliance under 21 CFR Part 700 (US) or ISO 22716 (international). Strongly recommended: FDA OTC registration if you plan to sell sunscreen or acne products, and a documented stability and challenge-test program.
Treat 'organic' and 'clean' badges as marketing inputs, not manufacturer credentials. The credible signal is willingness to share batch records, stability data and microbial test results on request.
The 12 questions to ask on the first call
A short technical call separates real partners from order-takers. The answers should be specific and unhesitating.
- Who is the technical lead on my account, not the sales lead?
- What is your MOQ per SKU and per total order?
- Can you share a redacted stability protocol from a comparable product?
- What is your standard lead time, and what is your worst case in the last 12 months?
- Which third-party labs do you use for micro and stability?
- How do you handle a failed batch — credit, rerun, or partial?
- What is included in your per-unit price and what is billed separately?
- Do you own your fill line or outsource it?
- What is your typical client size — indie, mid-market, mass?
- How is IP handled if I bring an ingredient or process?
- What are your payment terms and deposit requirements?
- Will you sign a mutual NDA before formulation begins?
Red flags that should end the conversation
Refusal to share any reference clients. Per-unit pricing quoted without a brief. No written stability program. A salesperson who answers technical questions a chemist should answer. Sudden, unexplained price increases between quote and PO.
Frequently asked
- What is the minimum order quantity for skincare manufacturing?
- Private label MOQs typically begin at 250 to 500 units per SKU. Custom-formulated runs usually start at 3,000 units per SKU to amortize lab development time.
- Should I work with an overseas skincare manufacturer?
- Korean and EU manufacturers are credible for clinical and advanced-actives skincare but add 4 to 8 weeks of lead time and customs complexity. For first-time founders, a domestic partner is usually the faster path to a clean launch.
